Several Ontario hospitals, including those in Windsor-Essex, are gearing up to notify over 326,000 patients following a cyberattack last fall that compromised their personal information. The breach, perpetrated by hackers known as Daixin Team, led to the posting of patient data on the dark web. CEOs from all five affected hospitals expressed their commitment to addressing the breach’s impact and ensuring patient privacy.
Among the impacted hospitals are Windsor Regional Hospital, Erie Shores HealthCare, and Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, with patient data including names, addresses, and health card numbers compromised. Despite the breach, efforts are underway to restore service systems, with most hospitals reporting a return to normalcy. The hospitals are collaborating with Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner to manage the fallout and provide support to affected individuals.
Letters detailing the breach and its impact will be sent to affected patients, outlining the compromised information and providing contact details for further assistance. This coordinated effort underscores the hospitals’ dedication to transparency and accountability in addressing cybersecurity incidents. Meanwhile, TransForm Shared Service Organization, which supports these hospitals, faces legal action in the form of a $480-million class-action lawsuit.
