Oman Announces New Cybersecurity Initiatives

Oman’s cybersecurity sector is on the verge of significant transformation as new initiatives were announced by H.E. Eng. Said bin Hamoud bin Said al Ma’awali, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT). These initiatives were unveiled during the 12th edition of the Regional Cybersecurity Week held in Muscat, which gathered over 600 decision-makers, experts, and specialists from 60 countries. The conference focused on pressing developments in cybersecurity and the various threats that governments and national institutions face in today’s digital landscape. Minister Ma’awali emphasized Oman’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation within the cybersecurity sector, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in combating cyber threats.

One of the standout initiatives introduced at the conference is the CREST CAMP program, aimed at enhancing the maturity of cybersecurity service providers in Oman. Collaborating with the British CREST organization, known for its expertise in cybersecurity, this program seeks to bolster the capabilities of local firms. Such partnerships are vital for the ongoing development of the cybersecurity landscape in Oman, enabling local businesses to adapt and grow in an increasingly complex digital environment. The emphasis on collaboration and skill development signifies a proactive approach to enhancing the nation’s cybersecurity readiness.

In addition to the CREST CAMP program, the establishment of the Hadatha Center for the Cybersecurity Industry was announced. This center, a joint effort between Sultan Qaboos University and the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, aims to cultivate local industries within the cybersecurity sector. By equipping national talent with the skills necessary to thrive in a digital economy, Oman is positioning itself to address future cybersecurity challenges effectively. The creation of the Cybersecurity Industry Monitoring Centre, touted as the first of its kind globally, further complements these efforts by monitoring and measuring the growth of the cybersecurity sector in Oman, ensuring responsiveness to evolving threats.

During his address, Minister Ma’awali highlighted Oman’s achievements in cybersecurity, noting the nation’s commendable ranking in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index published by the International Telecommunication Union. This recognition stems from the collaborative efforts of MTCIT, government agencies, and private entities like the Cyber Defence Centre. The week also featured the first Gulf Cybersecurity Industry Hackathon, encouraging innovation and collaboration within the cybersecurity domain. Looking ahead, H.E. Ma’awali reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing technology, knowledge, and innovation as crucial components for diversifying income sources and advancing the digital economy, ultimately enhancing Oman’s resilience against cyber threats.
