The FBI, NSA, and CISA have issued a critical warning about the North Korean cyber-espionage group Andariel, which is ramping up its attacks on crucial infrastructure sectors in the United States. Operating under various aliases, including Silent Chollima, Onyx Sleet, and Stonefly, Andariel is targeting defense, aerospace, nuclear, and engineering companies to steal sensitive technical information and intellectual property. This campaign aims to advance North Korea’s military and nuclear programs by extracting data related to advanced weaponry, aerospace technology, and nuclear processing.
The group’s recent operations include ransomware attacks on U.S. healthcare entities, which are being used to fund their broader cyber-espionage activities. The U.S. government has responded by offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Rim Jong Hyok, a key figure in Andariel’s operations. The Justice Department has also indicted Jong Hyok on charges related to his involvement in attacks against multiple U.S. entities, including NASA and Air Force bases.
Andariel has been active for several years, with researchers tracking its operations under various names since at least 2009. The group has been linked to numerous information-stealing campaigns and destructive attacks across various critical sectors, including defense, aerospace, and healthcare. Despite its longstanding focus on cyber-espionage, recent reports indicate a shift towards more financially motivated attacks, such as ransomware, which reflects the group’s evolving tactics in response to its geopolitical priorities.
The joint advisory from the FBI, NSA, and CISA details the group’s use of well-known vulnerabilities to gain initial access to target networks. Notably, Andariel has exploited flaws like Log4Shell and vulnerabilities in Apache ActiveMQ and Progress Software’s MOVEIt to infiltrate systems. Once inside, the group employs a range of custom tools for data theft and network access. The advisory provides guidance on protecting against these attacks and offers indicators of compromise to help organizations detect and defend against Andariel’s sophisticated cyber operations.
