New Relic Alerts Clients of Cyber Incident

New Relic, a web tracking and analytics company, has alerted its customer base about a recent cybersecurity incident through a sparse security advisory. While the advisory acknowledges the incident, it lacks concrete details regarding the nature or specifics of the cyber threat encountered.

The company’s communication urged users to stay vigilant and monitor their accounts for any suspicious activity, hinting at a potential risk of account compromise. However, the advisory provided no actionable steps or clear guidance for affected users, leaving them uncertain about the necessary measures to protect their accounts or systems.

CEO Bill Staples attempted to reassure customers in an email, emphasizing the company’s dedication to investigating and addressing the incident with third-party cybersecurity experts. Despite this assurance, the lack of substantial information or clarity about the incident’s scope or severity raised concerns among recipients.

The advisory vaguely mentioned that customers would be directly contacted if specific actions were required, but for those not contacted directly, no immediate action was necessary. This lack of specific guidance led to confusion among customers, leaving them unsure whether to anticipate further communication or take proactive steps to safeguard their systems.

The scarcity of details in the advisory and email from the CEO left customers in a state of uncertainty during the Thanksgiving long weekend, as they grappled with the ambiguity of the situation and the absence of explicit instructions.

This unexpected and vague communication from New Relic has caused confusion and concern among users, leaving them in a limbo regarding the necessary measures to protect their accounts and systems in the face of the cyber incident.
