New Malware Skims WordPress E-commerce Sites

New Malware Skims WordPress E-commerce Sites

A sophisticated new malware campaign has emerged that is targeting both WordPress and WooCommerce e-commerce websites. This malware family demonstrates advanced technical sophistication through its unique and very adaptable modular software architecture. The campaign’s technical complexity is particularly notable for its incorporation of many different anti-analysis security measures. These measures are typically associated with advanced persistent threats, not common credit card skimmers or other similar malware.

There is clear evidence indicating continuous development and deployment activities spanning from September 2023 through the present day. The malware’s persistence and its adaptability suggest a well-resourced threat actor capable of maintaining long-term attack operations. They are also continuously refining their attack methodologies in order to successfully evade all modern detection security systems.

The malware’s operational timeline reveals a sustained and also evolving threat to the entire e-commerce landscape.

Perhaps the most alarming aspect is the campaign’s innovation in packaging its malware as a rogue WordPress plugin. This plugin comes complete with backend server functionality that converts compromised websites into custom interfaces for the attackers. This unique approach represents a significant departure from all traditional skimming operations by establishing persistent infrastructure directly. This effectively creates distributed command and control capabilities while maintaining the appearance of having legitimate plugin software functionality.

The most advanced variants incorporate console rebinding mechanisms that will dynamically override standard console debugging methods.

The malware’s most sophisticated aspect lies in its comprehensive suite of many advanced anti-analysis and evasion techniques. The primary evasion mechanism involves the continuous monitoring of browser developer tools through detailed window dimension analysis. Additionally, the malware implements special debugger traps and infinite loops designed to crash browser tabs or freeze analysis tools.
