NCA Dismantles Major DDoS Marketplace

On July 22, 2024, the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) successfully infiltrated and disrupted Digitalstress.su, a notorious underground marketplace facilitating Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. This site, which was thought to have been behind tens of thousands of cyber attacks globally, was taken over and rendered inoperative by the NCA. The operation, part of a broader initiative named Operation PowerOff, aimed to expose and neutralize the infrastructure used by cybercriminals.

The Digitalstress.su site, which operated under the largely outdated USSR web domain, was redirected to a warning page notifying users that their data had been collected by law enforcement. The NCA, collaborating with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), had previously arrested one of the site’s alleged operators earlier in July. This collaborative effort underscores the ongoing global campaign against cybercrime, highlighting how such domains, often believed to offer anonymity, can be exploited to dismantle criminal activities.

Deputy Director Paul Foster of the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit emphasized that booter services, which are often used by individuals with minimal technical skills, have become a gateway to cybercrime. He warned that users of these services have now exposed themselves to law enforcement scrutiny. The operation demonstrates the effectiveness of combining traditional law enforcement tactics with innovative approaches to disrupt cybercriminal networks and protect individuals and organizations from online threats.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Woods from the PSNI echoed the sentiment, praising the collaborative effort and reinforcing the message that cybercriminals are not beyond reach. The NCA’s actions serve as a reminder that cybercriminals can face significant legal consequences, regardless of their motives or methods. This successful takedown aims to deter others from engaging in similar illegal activities and highlights the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combating cybercrime on a global scale.
