The Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities Services (MCBDDS) recently alerted individuals about a data privacy event that potentially exposed sensitive personal information. The incident, first identified in February, involved suspicious activity within the board’s network environment. This led to an investigation, and while no identity theft reports have emerged, the board confirmed that Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, driver’s license information, health insurance details, and treatment-related information might have been affected.
In response to the event, MCBDDS promptly investigated and notified approximately 10,000 individuals, including employees, former employees, and service beneficiaries. Of those, fewer than 375 individuals had highly sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers, potentially accessed. The majority of the compromised data pertained to employee information.
The board emphasized its commitment to data security, stating that it took immediate action upon discovering the breach. Measures included investigating the breach, notifying affected individuals, and reviewing existing data privacy policies to prevent future incidents. MCBDDS also offered an assistance line for those seeking more information about their potential involvement.
Looking ahead, MCBDDS plans to enhance its data privacy protocols based on this incident. This effort aims to bolster the agency’s security measures and mitigate the risk of similar events in the future. For those concerned about their information, the board has set up a hotline for inquiries and further assistance.
