Missouri Investigates Global Cyber Attack

The State of Missouri’s Office of Administration, Information Technology Services Division (OA-ITSD), is currently conducting an investigation into the potential impact of a global cyber attack that targeted private entities and several state governments. The cyber attack is believed to have originated from a ransomware gang exploiting a vulnerability in a third-party transfer system known as MoveIT. In response to the threat, Missouri authorities swiftly identified any connections with the MoveIT system and initiated a thorough investigation to assess the extent of the cyber attack and identify potentially affected agencies and vendors. The investigation is still ongoing, and public notices will be issued as soon as entities, individuals, or systems impacted are identified.

The cyber attack is part of a larger trend where ransomware gangs exploit vulnerabilities in third-party systems, posing a significant threat to both private and public organizations. The State of Missouri is taking proactive measures to understand the scope of the attack and mitigate potential risks to its agencies and vendors. The focus remains on identifying any entities or individuals that may have been impacted and promptly communicating relevant information to the public. This incident underscores the increasing challenges posed by cyber threats, emphasizing the need for robust cybersecurity measures and collaborative efforts to address such attacks on a global scale.

As the investigation progresses, the State of Missouri’s commitment to transparency is evident through its intention to provide public notices promptly. The evolving nature of cyber threats necessitates a vigilant approach to cybersecurity, with state agencies actively working to safeguard against potential risks and secure critical systems. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ongoing efforts to enhance cybersecurity infrastructure and response mechanisms to protect against the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats.
