Microsoft Teams experienced a significant outage, with thousands of users reporting issues on social media. The disruption, which began around 11 a.m. EST, also affected the broader Microsoft 365 system and the Microsoft Store.
According to Downdetector.com, the peak of the outage saw approximately 14,500 U.S. users reporting problems with Teams, with users in Canada, the UK, and South America, particularly Brazil, also affected. The issues primarily involved delays in Teams chat and channels, causing disordered replies and widespread user frustration. Over half of the complaints about Microsoft’s products, which include Outlook and server connections, centered around the applications themselves.
Microsoft’s response to the outage involved identifying a networking issue and attempting a failover to mitigate the impact. Microsoft’s initial efforts to resolve the issue in the EMEA region showed some improvement, but problems persisted in the Americas.
Despite the failover operation not providing immediate relief, Microsoft reported gradual improvements as they optimized traffic patterns and applied configuration changes. As of 2023, Microsoft Teams boasts a user base of 320 million, highlighting the significant impact of the outage.
