Microsoft has made an unexpected announcement regarding the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), revealing plans to discontinue support by March 5th, 2025. This move comes as a surprise to users and developers who have come to rely on WSA since its release in October 2021, which enabled the running of native Android apps on Windows 11 with full functionality.
The termination of support for WSA means that applications dependent on it, such as the Amazon Appstore on Windows and WSA games, will no longer receive support after the specified date. Despite this decision, users who have installed the Amazon Appstore or Android apps before March 5, 2024, will still be able to access and use them until the deprecation date in 2025.
In response to Microsoft’s decision, Amazon has also announced the end of support for the Windows Subsystem for Android, offering clarity to app developers and users alike. Amazon’s developer bulletin outlines that while developers can no longer submit new apps targeting Windows 11 after March 5, 2024, updates for existing apps can still be submitted until the complete discontinuation of the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11.
For now, Windows 11 users will still be able to utilize installed apps until the discontinuation date of March 5th, 2025. However, it remains unclear whether the apps will be automatically removed, cease to function, or simply no longer receive support after this deadline.
