Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) recently notified individuals of a data incident involving their personal information. On April 10, 2024, it was discovered that on or around January 30, 2024, an incorrect insurance company was added to a billing account, leading to the transmission of sensitive information to the wrong recipient. The information sent included demographic details such as names, medical record numbers, and limited clinical data.
The error was reported by the recipient, who confirmed that the documents were shredded. To date, MGH has no evidence of improper use of the information. Despite this, the hospital has outlined the rights of Massachusetts residents affected by the incident, including the ability to obtain or file a police report, and to request a security freeze on their credit file.
MGH has addressed the issue with the involved workforce member and has corrected the error. The hospital is also enhancing its safeguards and training to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
In addition to the corrective measures, MGH is providing guidance on steps individuals can take to protect themselves, including placing a security freeze on their credit report. The hospital expresses regret for any concern caused by the incident and remains committed to protecting patient information.
