Facebook owner Meta Platforms and social media company Snap have been given a December 1 deadline by the European Union (EU) to provide detailed information on their child protection measures against illegal and harmful content.
Furthermore, this directive from the EU comes a day after a similar message was sent to YouTube and TikTok, both owned by Alphabet. The European Commission, in line with the recently enforced Digital Services Act, requires major online platforms to enhance measures for taking down illicit content or face fines up to 6% of their global turnover.
The Commission had previously issued urgent orders to Meta, X, and TikTok, instructing them to outline actions taken to combat the dissemination of content related to terrorism, violence, and hate speech on their platforms, with the authority to open investigations if responses are deemed unsatisfactory.
