In late 2024, the city of McKinney, Texas, experienced a data breach that resulted in the potential exposure of sensitive personal information. The breach occurred on October 31, 2024, and was identified by city officials on November 14, 2024. A news release issued on February 3, 2025, revealed that the breach involved personal data such as Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, credit card details, financial account information, and medical insurance data. Letters were mailed on February 4, 2025, to notify individuals whose mailing addresses were on file.

Following the identification of the breach, city officials took swift action, engaging forensic consultants to investigate the incident. They also reported the breach to law enforcement and secured city systems to prevent further damage. While the investigation revealed the potential exposure of personal data, city officials clarified that they had not found any evidence of actual or attempted misuse of the exposed information.

Despite this, the city expressed deep regret over the incident and emphasized its commitment to strengthening security protocols to prevent similar breaches in the future.

To assist those impacted by the breach, the city has recommended individuals with concerns to contact a dedicated help line at 833-799-4194 for more information and to determine whether they were affected. Additionally, McKinney officials have offered free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services for one year to those impacted. The service aims to help protect individuals from any future misuse of their personal data and give them peace of mind as they monitor their information.

The city’s announcement also highlighted that McKinney remains focused on privacy and security. The city has committed to implementing stringent security measures moving forward, aiming to minimize the risk of future incidents. The breach serves as a reminder of the growing importance of robust cybersecurity measures, especially as personal data is increasingly stored and processed by municipal systems.
