The Mid-Columbia Center for Living (MCCFL) recently disclosed a data breach that may have compromised sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information stored within its systems. The breach was detected on January 24, 2024, when MCCFL identified suspicious activity in an employee’s email account. In response, the organization initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the nature and extent of the incident, highlighting its commitment to safeguarding patient information and addressing any potential risks.

Through its investigation, MCCFL discovered that unauthorized access to sensitive personal information had likely occurred through the compromised employee email account. As part of the investigation, MCCFL undertook a meticulous review of the data to identify the specific types of information that may have been exposed and the individuals affected. The types of sensitive information potentially accessed included names, Social Security numbers, addresses, medical records, Medicaid numbers, and health insurance information, underscoring the serious implications of this breach.

To keep individuals informed about the situation, MCCFL posted a notice about the incident on its website on August 19, 2024. This notice provided details about the breach and the specific types of information that may have been impacted. Furthermore, MCCFL took proactive measures by mailing data breach notification letters to the affected individuals, ensuring transparency and offering assistance in navigating the situation. This communication included details about the breach and what affected individuals could do to protect themselves.

As a precautionary measure, MCCFL is providing affected individuals with complimentary credit monitoring services for 12 months to help mitigate the risk of identity theft and fraud. The organization’s response to the breach reflects its dedication to protecting the personal information of its clients, especially considering its role as a recovery-oriented service provider for those dealing with mental health and substance abuse issues. With headquarters in The Dalles, Oregon, and additional locations in the state, MCCFL emphasizes the importance of privacy and security in the services it offers to the community.
