Mater Private Hospital in Dublin experienced a cyber attack last August that compromised personal information of its patients. The attack, which resulted from a compromised third-party account, exposed sensitive data including medical records, names, and addresses. No financial information was affected, and the breach involved a total of 1,461 patients.
The hospital’s IT systems were hacked, and cyber-security specialists were quickly engaged to manage the breach and aid in data recovery. The compromised data varied from fragments of medical information to more detailed records of treatment. The hospital has since been monitoring for any evidence of the data being misused or published.
Patients affected by the breach were notified by letter this month, and while they are advised to remain vigilant, there is currently no evidence that their information has been used maliciously or published externally. The hospital also informed the Data Protection Commission of the incident.
Mater Private Hospital has implemented enhanced security measures to prevent future breaches and continues to monitor the situation closely. The cyber-security specialists are actively checking less accessible areas of the internet for any signs of the compromised data.
