Maryville Academy Reports Data Breach

Maryville Academy, a childcare organization based in Des Plaines, Illinois, recently reported a data breach involving sensitive personal and protected health information. The breach was discovered on July 15, 2024, when unusual activity was detected within the organization’s IT systems. This prompted an immediate investigation to understand the nature of the breach and the extent of the unauthorized access. Upon completing the investigation, it was confirmed that sensitive personal information, such as Social Security numbers, names, and medical details, may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party.

As of the notice issued on September 13, 2024, Maryville is still in the process of reviewing the files to identify the specific individuals impacted by the breach. The organization has also taken steps to notify affected individuals, although the investigation is ongoing. The type of data exposed includes names, addresses, passport numbers, government IDs, and medical information, such as treatment history, diagnoses, and medical records. Maryville has emphasized that while sensitive data was accessed, there is no evidence to suggest that it has been misused at this time.

The breach notification posted on Maryville’s website reassured the public that the organization is actively investigating the incident and plans to provide more detailed information to the affected individuals. The breach notice highlighted the types of personal data potentially compromised and assured those affected that breach letters would be sent out. As part of their response, Maryville has committed to enhancing its security measures to prevent future incidents.

Maryville Academy, which has been serving Illinois communities since 1883, provides residential care, mental health services, healthcare, and family support services. It operates in several locations across Illinois, including Bartlett, Berwyn, Chicago, Des Plaines, and Niles, serving over 4,000 individuals annually. The organization, employing more than 200 staff members, is dedicated to helping children and families reach their full potential through a variety of educational and developmental programs.
