On April 4, 2023, Maimonides Medical Center (MMC) encountered a data breach as unauthorized access to patient information on one of its servers was discovered. The investigation determined that the hacker had gained entry to the server between March 18, 2023, and April 4, 2023. The compromised information includes names, addresses, and limited clinical details such as diagnosis and treatment information. Additionally, in a small number of instances, social security numbers could have been involved, as stated in MMC’s official statement.
In response to the breach, MMC has taken proactive measures, notifying 33,000 potentially affected patients for whom valid mailing addresses are available. To mitigate potential risks, MMC is offering free credit and identity monitoring for a period of 24 months to individuals whose information may have been compromised. The breach underscores the ongoing challenges in safeguarding sensitive medical data and highlights MMC’s commitment to transparency and protective measures for affected patients in the aftermath of the incident.
