Magnet Goblin Deploys Nerbian RAT

March 11, 2024

in Alerts

A financially driven threat actor, identified as Magnet Goblin, is swiftly incorporating one-day security vulnerabilities into its arsenal to breach edge devices and public-facing services, ultimately deploying malware on compromised hosts. This group, recognized for its rapid exploitation of newly disclosed vulnerabilities, particularly targets servers like Ivanti Connect Secure VPN, Magento, Qlik Sense, and possibly Apache ActiveMQ. Their attacks have been active since at least January 2022, posing a significant threat to digital security.

Check Point, in its analysis, highlights Magnet Goblin’s capability to exploit vulnerabilities within just one day of their disclosure, markedly increasing the risk level posed by this adversary. The deployment of these exploits occurs promptly, often within 24 hours after a proof-of-concept is made public, showcasing the group’s agility and proficiency in leveraging emerging vulnerabilities. This aggressive approach has allowed Magnet Goblin to gain unauthorized access and establish initial infection vectors, demonstrating their expertise in exploiting weaknesses in digital infrastructure.

Once successful in exploiting vulnerabilities, Magnet Goblin proceeds to deploy a cross-platform remote access trojan (RAT) known as Nerbian RAT, along with its simplified variant, MiniNerbian. These malware strains enable the execution of arbitrary commands received from a command-and-control (C2) server, facilitating data exfiltration and remote access to compromised systems. Additionally, the group employs various tools such as the WARPWIRE JavaScript credential stealer, Ligolo tunneling software, and legitimate remote desktop solutions like AnyDesk and ScreenConnect to further their malicious activities.

The prevalence of financially motivated threat actors like Magnet Goblin underscores the importance of proactive cybersecurity measures and timely patching of vulnerabilities. Their swift adoption of one-day exploits highlights the evolving nature of cyber threats and the need for constant vigilance in safeguarding digital assets. As threat actors continue to target previously unprotected areas, organizations must prioritize security protocols and stay abreast of emerging threats to mitigate risks effectively.
