Magnet Forensics Inc. has announced the acquisition of Medex Forensics, a company specializing in verifying the authenticity of digital media and identifying deepfakes and synthetic media. This acquisition enhances Magnet Forensics’ capabilities in digital investigations, particularly concerning the authenticity of video evidence. Medex’s Video Authentication Platform is already utilized by digital forensic examiners and investigators to ascertain the trustworthiness of digital evidence, particularly in cases involving child exploitation and disinformation.
Founded in 2021 and based in Madison, Wisconsin, Medex Forensics developed a patented approach to examining digital video, which allows investigators to determine whether videos have been edited and to identify original footage. The technology has proven instrumental in solving various criminal cases, providing investigators with crucial insights that can lead to identifying additional crimes and perpetrators. The acquisition emphasizes the growing importance of reliable video evidence in digital investigations, particularly in combating the challenges posed by deepfakes and generative AI.
Adam Belsher, CEO of Magnet Forensics, highlighted the necessity of having effective tools for public safety agencies to ensure the accuracy and defensibility of their cases. By integrating Medex Forensics’ technology, Magnet aims to provide enhanced resources to law enforcement agencies facing the increasing prevalence of digital crimes, especially those involving child exploitation. The acquisition also aligns with Magnet Forensics’ ongoing efforts to innovate and improve its product offerings in digital forensics.
Following the acquisition, Medex’s team will collaborate closely with Magnet Forensics to enhance existing tools, such as the Magnet Copilot, which integrates AI capabilities to assist investigators. Medex’s Video Authentication Platform will also be available as an add-on to Magnet Griffeye, allowing customers access to advanced tools for video evidence validation. This partnership reflects both companies’ commitment to advancing digital forensic technology and improving public safety outcomes.
