On January 1, 2025, Lithuania officially launched the Lithuanian Cyber Command (LTCYBERCOM), marking a significant step in enhancing its national security and defense capabilities. The establishment of LTCYBERCOM is part of a broader initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s defense posture and improving interoperability with NATO partners. This new command will oversee cyber operations and manage critical communication and information systems (CIS) vital for Lithuania’s military readiness and coordination with international allies.
LTCYBERCOM was created to centralize Lithuania’s cyber defense efforts under a single authority. The command includes a dedicated headquarters to plan and execute cyber operations, as well as the Lithuanian Great Hetman Kristupas Radvila Perkūnas CIS Battalion, which will provide robust communication services across the defense sector. This restructuring also integrates the Ministry of National Defense’s IT services and aligns them with the broader national cybersecurity framework.
Lithuania’s Deputy Minister of National Defense, Tomas Godliauskas, emphasized the importance of LTCYBERCOM in modern defense strategies. He noted that many NATO members have already established similar cyber defense units, highlighting the need for Lithuania to bolster its cyber capabilities. The establishment of LTCYBERCOM is vital to the coordination of military actions in cyberspace and countering emerging cyber threats that could impact national security.
Alongside LTCYBERCOM, Lithuania’s National Cyber Security Center will continue its role in responding to cyber incidents and ensuring resilience across government agencies and key sectors. The creation of LTCYBERCOM and the legislative changes made by the Seimas in 2024 represent Lithuania’s commitment to strengthening its cyber defenses. With this proactive stance, Lithuania is better positioned to collaborate with NATO allies and safeguard its national interests in an increasingly cyber-dependent world.
