Las Vegas Police Warn of Cyber Threats

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has issued a cyber awareness advisory ahead of the Black Hat and DEF CON conventions, which are recognized as hotspots for cyber attackers. The advisory highlights the potential risks attendees face during these events, stating that these conventions serve as “playgrounds” for attackers to test new techniques and tools. As a precaution, the police have provided guidelines for attendees to follow before, during, and after the conferences, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding personal devices.

Key recommendations include turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, locking devices, and restarting phones daily to eliminate potential malware installations. Additionally, the advisory suggests avoiding the use of credit cards and contactless payment methods while in Las Vegas. Shannon Wilkinson, the Chief Technical Officer of Tego Cyber, a local cybersecurity firm, echoed these sentiments, warning that turning off wireless connections is crucial due to vulnerabilities associated with phones in crowded areas like the Las Vegas Strip.

Wilkinson also pointed out that government agencies may use DEF CON as an opportunity to recruit talented hackers, while companies may incentivize attendees to test their products for vulnerabilities. This often takes the form of challenges where participants can earn rewards or trophies for successfully hacking products. The competitive atmosphere at these conventions fosters an environment where attendees may attempt to hack into digital displays at casinos and other venues, not necessarily with malicious intent but rather to enhance their reputation within the hacking community.

In particular, the Sphere—a prominent attraction in Las Vegas—has been identified as a potential target for aspiring hackers during the conventions. Wilkinson noted that the allure of hacking such a high-profile venue could attract many individuals seeking to make a name for themselves. The combination of competitive spirit and the unique environment of Black Hat and DEF CON underscores the necessity for attendees to remain vigilant and prioritize their cybersecurity.
