Kofile Technologies Data Breach Exposes SSNs

On July 18, 2024, Kofile Technologies, Inc. revealed a major data breach that exposed sensitive consumer information, including Social Security numbers (SSNs). This breach, which was reported to the Attorney General of Massachusetts, resulted from a cyberattack that compromised data stored on Kofile’s network. The incident has raised serious concerns about data security and the risk of identity theft for those affected.

The breach was detected after Kofile launched an internal investigation into unusual network activity. The unauthorized access allowed cybercriminals to obtain personal information such as names and SSNs, which are critical for identity theft and financial fraud. In response, Kofile has taken immediate steps to secure its email environment and other affected systems to prevent further unauthorized access. The company is now focused on determining the full extent of the breach and the number of individuals whose data was compromised.

To address the fallout from the breach, Kofile has started notifying affected individuals through data breach notification letters. These letters outline the specifics of the breach, including the types of data exposed and steps individuals can take to protect themselves. Additionally, Kofile is offering 24 months of free credit monitoring services through Experian to help mitigate the risk of identity theft and fraud. This service will assist affected individuals in monitoring their credit reports and detecting any suspicious activity early.

Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Dallas, Texas, Kofile Technologies is a key player in the field of data digitization and preservation, primarily serving government organizations. With over 3,000 government clients, a workforce of more than 500 employees, and annual revenues of approximately $105 million, Kofile’s services are vital for managing critical data. The breach highlights the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and the importance of a swift and effective response to protect consumer information and maintain trust in digital services. As Kofile continues its recovery efforts, the incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in securing sensitive data against evolving cyber threats.
