JRC Notifies Individuals of Data Breach

The Judge Rotenberg Educational Center (JRC) in Massachusetts recently informed individuals of a significant data security incident stemming from a ransomware attack on February 13, 2024. In response to the breach, JRC promptly engaged a team of cybersecurity experts to conduct a forensic investigation. This investigation aimed to determine the extent of the attack and assess whether any personal information had been accessed or compromised. After thorough analysis, it was revealed on September 5, 2024, that certain personal data may have been affected, prompting the organization to notify those impacted.

The types of personal information potentially compromised in the attack include names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, medical records, and health insurance information. JRC took immediate action to identify current addresses of individuals affected by the breach to ensure timely notification. On September 25, 2024, the center began sending out notifications to those impacted, offering essential details about the incident and guidance on protecting their personal information.

In the aftermath of the breach, JRC reported the incident to federal law enforcement and is cooperating fully with authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable. To bolster security and mitigate the risk of future incidents, the organization has implemented additional measures. JRC is committed to maintaining the safety and confidentiality of its clients’ information, recognizing the serious implications of such data breaches.

To support individuals affected by the ransomware attack, JRC is offering complimentary credit monitoring services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. This service will alert individuals to any changes in their credit files for a period of 12 to 24 months, providing essential protection against potential identity theft and fraud. JRC encourages all impacted individuals to take advantage of these services and to review the guidance provided in their notifications to safeguard their personal information effectively.
