Japan’s Parking Pay Suffers Data Breach

Parking Pay Management Office, Inc. has issued an urgent notice regarding a potential data breach that may have compromised the personal registration information of its members. The incident, which occurred on September 16, 2024, involved unauthorized external manipulation of their management system, raising significant concerns among users about the security of their personal data. The company has since launched an investigation and is actively working to enhance security measures to protect sensitive information and restore member confidence.

The breach was traced back to an account that had been provided to a former system development contractor, which was misused, allowing unauthorized access to member information. The affected data includes member IDs, email addresses, vehicle number plates, and invitation codes. Importantly, Parking Pay has confirmed that no credit card or payment information was leaked during this incident, which could mitigate the risk of financial fraud for its users. However, to safeguard against potential exploitation, the company is advising all members to change their passwords as a precautionary measure, given the unauthorized access that occurred.

Since the breach was discovered on September 27, 2024, the Parking Pay team has conducted a thorough inspection of the affected system, confirming that it has since been repaired to prevent further unauthorized access. In addition to immediate remediation efforts, the company is committed to implementing more robust security measures. This includes enhancing security verification processes during system design stages and conducting regular audits of their security infrastructure to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities proactively. The organization is taking this matter very seriously, emphasizing that maintaining the security and privacy of its members’ data is a top priority.

As the investigation continues, Parking Pay underscores that it has not received reports of any damage resulting from the leak of personal information. They remain committed to transparency throughout this process and will keep their members informed of any developments regarding the situation. In the meantime, they urge users to stay vigilant against suspicious emails and other potential security threats. Members who may have concerns or questions related to this incident are encouraged to contact the dedicated hotline established for inquiries regarding possible information leaks. The company sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the understanding and cooperation of its members during this challenging time.
