Indian Taxpayer Data Leak Raises Concerns

October 2, 2023

in Incidents

Reports have surfaced about a data leak affecting Indian taxpayers, posing a potential threat to their sensitive financial information. The breach was discovered when a hacker forum user, going by the name ‘Hacking,’ publicly released what was claimed to be Indian taxpayer data.

This incident raised significant concerns about data security in the country. The data in question was purportedly obtained from the website TaxReturnWala, which provides financial and tax-related assistance to both individuals and corporations.

The website TaxReturnWala was still accessible when verified by The Cyber Express team, and attempts were made to contact the organization for comments on the alleged data leak.

However, as of now, there has been no response from TaxReturnWala regarding the incident. The hacker forum post, titled “WordPress Online Tax Services Admin Table Data [India],” did not specify the file size of the leaked data but mentioned that it was in CSV format, commonly used for tabular data storage.

While the authenticity of the data leak has not been verified, it is essential to note that hacker forums often witness users posting data claims to attract other cybercriminals. It’s possible that the release of Indian taxpayer data without a price tag may indicate a lack of confidence in finding buyers or failed ransom negotiations with TaxReturnWala.

The specifics of the leaked data include email addresses, passwords, usernames, and other details. Additionally, the hacker forum user hinted at the need to “crack the hash” to access the site, suggesting a potential hacking technique.

The information released in the forum post could potentially aid other hackers in targeting TaxReturnWala’s systems. The forum user ‘Hacking’ had joined the dark web platform in June 2023 and had already made 428 posts, earning a reputation score of 195 and VIP status.
