Huntress Reveals SMB Threat Rise

Huntress, a leading Managed Security Platform aimed at small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) and their supporting Managed Service Providers (MSPs), has unveiled its pioneering SMB Threat Report. This comprehensive report marks a significant milestone by delivering crucial insights into the emerging cyber threats specifically targeting SMBs.

By highlighting evolving adversarial tactics and tradecraft, the report serves as an invaluable resource, empowering businesses with critical knowledge to bolster their defenses against cyber threats. Joe Slowik, Huntress’ threat intelligence manager, emphasized the relentless evolution of the threat landscape, stating, “Threat actors are adapting their techniques to significantly impact SMBs, and our objective is to empower them with the necessary knowledge to defend against these ever-evolving adversarial tactics.”

The SMB Threat Report focuses on illuminating the shifting patterns in cyberattacks targeting SMBs, shedding light on five key takeaways that underscore the changing dynamics of cyber threats faced by these businesses. One significant revelation from the report is the diminishing prevalence of conventional malware in cyberattacks, accounting for only 56% of incidents in Q3 2023. Instead, cyber adversaries have shifted their tactics towards utilizing scripting frameworks and legitimate tools, indicating a decline in the era of malware-driven cyber assaults.

Furthermore, the report outlines the increasing threats posed by identity-focused attacks such as Business Email Compromise (BEC), illustrating that 64% of identity-related incidents in the same period involved malicious forwarding or other deceptive inbox rules, emphasizing the rising concern of identity-based intrusions. This report stands as a testament to Huntress’ commitment to enhancing cybersecurity for SMBs, leveraging its deep intelligence data derived from the Huntress managed security platform. By comprehensively dissecting emerging cyber threats and attack patterns, Huntress aims to arm SMBs and their MSP partners with actionable insights, enabling proactive measures to mitigate risks and safeguard their businesses against the evolving threat landscape.
