In September 2024, the University of Genoa became the target of a cyberattack carried out by the hacker group Ransomhub. The attack primarily focused on the university’s Department of Mathematics website, where the hackers managed to steal approximately 18 gigabytes of sensitive data. In an effort to prevent the release of this stolen material, the attackers demanded an undisclosed ransom, providing a strict 13-day deadline for payment.
The university quickly reported the breach, and investigations were initiated by the Postal Police, under the coordination of Alessandro Carmeli. The authorities promptly arrived at the university’s headquarters on Via Balbi to begin their inquiry into the nature of the attack and the identity of the perpetrators. The situation has escalated into a broader concern, as the same group, Ransomhub, has been linked to other recent cyberattacks against Italian entities.
Ransomhub is notorious for its ransom demands and its ability to cause significant disruptions. In 2023, the same group had successfully targeted the Municipality of Taggia, demanding a hefty ransom of $300,000 to avoid releasing stolen data. Their attacks appear to be part of an ongoing trend of cybercrime aimed at Italian institutions, with many fearing that similar incidents could continue unless more robust cyber defenses are put in place.
At the University of Genoa, the attack has prompted heightened security measures and an urgent response to safeguard remaining sensitive data. The university is cooperating with law enforcement in hopes of identifying the attackers and preventing any further harm. With the investigation ongoing, there remains significant concern over the potential impact on the university’s reputation and its ability to ensure the security of its digital infrastructure.
