Guilty Plea in Hacking and Fraud

Robert A. Purbeck, also known as “Lifelock” and “Studmaster,” recently pleaded guilty in an Atlanta federal courtroom to two charges in an 11-count indictment from 2021. The charges related to violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). Purbeck’s case had been a subject of interest for DataBreaches since 2017 when he revealed details of his hacks and extortion attempts involving medical sector organizations. In his plea agreement, Purbeck faces the possibility of a maximum term of imprisonment of 5 years for each count. Moreover, he is obliged to full restitution, due and payable immediately, to all victims of the offense(s) and relevant conduct. prosecution is set to recommend that Purbeck be sentenced to no more than 70 months imprisonment, followed by a term of supervised release. Purbeck’s agreement also includes a commitment to pay $1,048,702.98 in restitution to victims, from personally identifiable information obtained through numerous data breaches, which affected at least 132,725 individuals. Furthermore, Purbeck has waived rights to request or receive records pertaining to the investigation or prosecution of the.

Purbeck’s sentencing is scheduled for June 18, 4, at 10:30 AM in Newnan Division of U.S. District Court for the Northern of Georgia.
