Gouda Library Ransomware Attack

Gouda Library is grappling with the aftermath of a ransomware attack where the perpetrators, identified as the 8Base Ransomware group, claim to have accessed thirty gigabytes of data, including sensitive information like passport details of employees and customers. The cyber incident has disrupted various services, impacting book submissions and hindering data exchange between the physical and online library. While the library acknowledges the attack on its website, the full extent of data theft and the method through which the attackers gained access remain undisclosed. The library is employing an emergency system for self-service counters, but the timeline for full system restoration is uncertain.

Miranda van Elswijk from Gouda Library acknowledges the severity of the situation, referring to it as a “cyber incident” with ransomware. The attack not only affects routine services but also introduces delays in processing changes, such as password updates, subscription forms, and blockages. The library’s admission of the ransomware incident comes with limited details, leaving patrons and the public in suspense about the potential compromise of sensitive information. The 8Base Ransomware group, known for their criminal activities, has set a ransom deadline of June 11, threatening to release the stolen data if their demands are not met, drawing parallels to a cyber attack on Rotterdam Library in October.

The impact of the ransomware attack extends to the functioning of Gouda Library’s systems, causing disruptions in essential services. Book submissions are particularly affected, with the system experiencing delays in automatically updating pass information. The library assures patrons that fines for overdue books will be waived once the system is restored. Despite the challenges, the library aims to maintain essential services through an emergency system, allowing limited functionality for self-service counters. The attackers have escalated the situation by threatening to publish the stolen data on June 11 unless the library complies with their ransom demands, adding urgency to the recovery efforts.
