The Golden Corral restaurant chain has revealed a significant data breach, affecting the personal information of more than 180,000 individuals. The breach, which occurred between August 11 and August 15, 2023, saw attackers gain access to sensitive data belonging to current and former employees as well as beneficiaries. Golden Corral has taken steps to notify federal law enforcement and implement additional security measures following the breach, which temporarily disrupted corporate operations.
While the exact number of individuals impacted by the breach was not disclosed in the recent press release, a filing with Maine’s Attorney General revealed that data from 183,272 individuals was stolen during the attack. The compromised information includes employee names, Social Security numbers, financial account details, driver’s license numbers, medical information, usernames and passwords, and health insurance details.
Golden Corral has begun the process of notifying affected individuals, having located address information for all impacted individuals on January 26 and initiating breach notification letters on February 16. Despite the lack of reported misuse of the stolen information, the restaurant chain advises affected individuals to remain vigilant against identity theft by monitoring account statements and explanations of benefits for any suspicious activity, and to promptly report such incidents to relevant authorities.
