French Casinos Hit by Ransomware Attack

On July 18, 2024, the Grand Cercle casino and the Poker Bowl in Aix-les-Bains, Savoie, France experienced a severe ransomware attack that led to their temporary closure. The cyber assault, which involved the encryption of critical server data, forced both establishments to cease operations. The attack highlights the increasing vulnerability of even well-established businesses to sophisticated cyber threats. The casinos, which are key players in the local entertainment and tourism sectors, immediately took steps to address the breach and secure their systems.

Following the initial closure, the affected casinos filed a formal complaint and worked diligently to mitigate the impact of the attack. On July 22, they began to gradually reopen, with slot machines becoming operational by Monday morning. However, other services within the casinos remain suspended as the establishments continue their efforts to fully resolve the incident. The casinos have reported significant operational losses due to the attack but have not provided detailed information about the volume or type of data that was compromised.

The Paris prosecutor’s office has assigned the specialized cybercrime unit, OFAC, to lead the investigation into the ransomware attack. This unit is tasked with uncovering the full scope of the breach and identifying the perpetrators. The affected casinos have praised their IT and security teams for their prompt action, which helped to contain the threat and prevent further damage. Despite these efforts, the casinos are still assessing the full extent of the disruption and working on restoring all services to normal operations.

This incident underscores the growing threat of ransomware attacks and their potential impact on business operations. The Grand Cercle casino and Poker Bowl are collaborating closely with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts to enhance their defenses and prevent future attacks. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on recovering from the current breach and strengthening security measures to safeguard against future cyber threats. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of robust cybersecurity practices in protecting sensitive data and maintaining operational continuity.
