Fortinet has recently issued urgent security advisories regarding two critical vulnerabilities affecting its FortiWLM and FortiManager products. The flaws pose significant risks to enterprise networks, enabling attackers to execute unauthorized code or commands remotely. The vulnerabilities were discovered in the FortiWLM wireless LAN management solution and the FortiManager centralized security management platform, both of which are widely used in enterprise environments to manage network security.
The first vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2023-34990, affects FortiWLM and stems from a path traversal issue. This flaw, with a CVSS score of 9.6, allows unauthenticated attackers to read sensitive files by exploiting improper validation of the “imagename” parameter in the /ems/cgi-bin/ezrf_lighttpd.cgi endpoint. Affected versions include FortiWLM 8.6.0 through 8.6.5 and 8.5.0 through 8.5.4. Fortinet has urged users to update to FortiWLM 8.6.6 or higher to mitigate the risk.
The second vulnerability, CVE-2024-48889, impacts FortiManager and could allow authenticated attackers to execute arbitrary commands remotely. This flaw, which has a CVSS score of 7.2, arises from improper neutralization of special elements in OS commands. The vulnerability affects multiple versions of FortiManager, including 7.6.0, 7.4.0 through 7.4.4, and older versions down to 6.4.10. Users are advised to upgrade to the latest versions to prevent potential attacks.
Fortinet’s advisories provide detailed information on the affected versions and remediation steps for both vulnerabilities. Organizations relying on Fortinet products are strongly urged to apply the necessary patches immediately. The discovery of these vulnerabilities highlights the importance of timely patching and maintaining strong cybersecurity practices to protect enterprise networks from evolving threats.
