FirstBank Puerto Rico Data Breach

FirstBank Puerto Rico faces a recent data breach reported by Mortgage Industry Advisory Corporation (MIAC) on June 8, 2023. The cyberattack on FirstBank’s IT network resulted in unauthorized access to customer data, prompting MIAC to send out data breach notification letters to affected individuals. While the specific data types compromised remain unconfirmed, MIAC’s investigation revealed that certain customer data was subject to unauthorized access between April 5 and April 6, 2023. The breach, impacting multiple financial institutions, led to the disclosure of leaked Social Security numbers.

MIAC initiated the notification process promptly after discovering the unauthorized access, sending out data breach letters on June 8, 2023, to customers affected by the incident. Unfortunately, the comprehensive list of compromised data types is not yet available. It is crucial to note that the breach was limited to the information provided to MIAC and did not extend to FirstBank Puerto Rico’s IT network. MIAC’s actions aim to inform customers about the breach and provide details about the compromised information to ensure transparency and address potential concerns.

Founded in 1948, FirstBank Puerto Rico, officially known as First Bancorp, is a significant financial institution based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. With 67 branches in Puerto Rico and Florida, it stands as the largest bank in Puerto Rico. Employing over 3,133 people and generating approximately $904 million in annual revenue, FirstBank Puerto Rico plays a substantial role in the financial landscape. The breach underscores the challenges faced by institutions in safeguarding customer data and the importance of swift and transparent communication in the aftermath of such incidents.
