Filipino Artist’s YouTube Accounts Hacked

Several prominent Filipino music artists, including well-known bands SB19 and Ben&Ben, have recently fallen victim to a sophisticated hacking incident that targeted their YouTube accounts. The hackers exploited these popular channels to propagate a cryptocurrency scam centered around XRP, leveraging a deepfake of Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse to lend credibility to their fraudulent scheme. The scam involved misleading claims that XRP would surge to $4, enticing viewers to transfer funds to specified addresses with promises of doubled returns—an all too familiar tactic used by cryptocurrency scammers looking to capitalize on market hype and investor FOMO.

Ben&Ben, renowned for their extensive following exceeding three million subscribers on YouTube, swiftly addressed the breach. The band publicly acknowledged the hack on their official Facebook page, reassuring fans and subscribers while informing them of the ongoing unauthorized streaming of deceptive content on their compromised channel. Despite their concerted efforts to regain control and mitigate the impact, the band faced challenges in fully securing their platform against further exploitation.

Similarly, SB19, another immensely popular Filipino band with millions of YouTube followers, also found their channel compromised by unauthorized access. The group acted promptly to regain control of their account and promptly reported the incident to appropriate authorities. This proactive response highlights the bands’ commitment to protecting their fanbase and maintaining the integrity of their digital presence in the face of increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

The use of deepfake technology in this scam underscores the evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals to deceive and manipulate online audiences. By leveraging realistic simulations of prominent figures like Brad Garlinghouse, hackers exploit trust and celebrity influence to manipulate unsuspecting viewers into financial transactions that benefit the perpetrators. Such incidents not only jeopardize the financial security of fans and subscribers but also underscore the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures across digital platforms. As artists and influencers continue to be targeted by cyberattacks, the importance of vigilance, education, and robust security protocols cannot be overstated in safeguarding online communities from exploitation and fraud.
