Fake CrowdStrike Manual Spreads Malware

Cybercriminals are capitalizing on the recent chaos caused by a faulty CrowdStrike Falcon update by distributing a new information-stealing malware known as “Daolpu.” The update, which led to widespread IT outages, has become a lure for threat actors who are sending phishing emails disguised as official CrowdStrike communications. These emails contain a malicious document titled ‘New_Recovery_Tool_to_help_with_CrowdStrike_issue_impacting_Windows.docm,’ purportedly offering a recovery tool to fix the issue.

Once the document is opened and macros are enabled, it downloads a base64-encoded DLL file from an external source. The DLL, named ‘mscorsvc.dll,’ is decoded using Windows certutil and executed on the compromised system. This action installs the Daolpu malware, which then targets various web browsers, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Cốc Cốc. The malware collects sensitive information such as account credentials, browser history, and authentication cookies, which are temporarily stored in a file named ‘result.txt’ before being sent to the attackers’ command and control (C2) server.

CrowdStrike has issued an advisory to help users detect and mitigate the threat posed by Daolpu. The company has provided a YARA rule for identifying artifacts related to the malware and urges customers to follow only official advice from their website or other trusted sources. In addition to Daolpu, other malicious activities have been reported, including the distribution of data wipers by the pro-Iranian hacktivist group ‘Handala’ and the use of HijackLoader to deploy the Remcos RAT under the guise of a CrowdStrike hotfix.

The exploitation of the CrowdStrike Falcon update issue highlights the opportunistic nature of cybercriminals, who are quick to exploit any vulnerabilities or chaotic situations. Users are advised to be cautious of any unsolicited communications and to verify the authenticity of any recovery tools or instructions they receive. As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for affected organizations to stay updated with the latest official recommendations and to implement robust security measures to protect their systems and data.
