Fake Apps Target India’s PM Kisan Yojana

Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting beneficiaries of India’s Prime Minister Kisan Yojana with deceptive tactics, distributing fake app links through social media platforms. The PM Kisan Yojana is a crucial government initiative that supports approximately eight crore farmers across India by providing INR 6,000 annually, distributed in three installments of INR 2,000. To access these benefits, farmers must register and update their information, including Aadhaar numbers, bank account details, and mobile numbers, via the official PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PMKSNY) website.

Exploiting this registration process, attackers are promoting malicious Android applications masquerading as the official PM Kisan Yojana app. These fraudulent apps, such as “PM KISAN YOJANA.apk,” are spread via social media and appear to offer legitimate functionality. Upon installation, the apps display forms that closely resemble official bank interfaces, tricking users into providing sensitive information like mobile phone numbers, MPINs, and bank card details.

The malicious apps go beyond mere data collection; they are also designed to steal SMS messages, which can further jeopardize users’ financial security. By accessing these messages, attackers can compromise personal and banking information, leading to potential financial losses for the victims. This sophisticated scam highlights the need for increased vigilance when dealing with online services related to financial transactions or personal data updates.

Security experts emphasize the importance of using only official channels and verified apps for registration and updates. Farmers and other beneficiaries are advised to be cautious of unsolicited links and applications, particularly those shared through unofficial or untrusted sources. By adhering to these precautions, individuals can better protect themselves against the growing threat of cyber fraud targeting government program beneficiaries.
