Rockwell Automation’s FactoryTalk Batch View, a manufacturing process control solution, has been found to have a critical vulnerability that could allow attackers to bypass authentication. The flaw arises from the use of shared secrets across accounts, which may enable a threat actor to impersonate a legitimate user if they can gather the necessary information during authentication. This vulnerability, identified as CVE-2024-45823, is particularly concerning due to its potential for remote exploitation and has been assigned a CVSS v4 base score of 9.2, signifying a high-risk scenario.
The vulnerability impacts versions 2.01.00 and prior of the FactoryTalk Batch View software, a tool used in critical manufacturing sectors worldwide. Exploitation of this flaw could grant an attacker unauthorized access, potentially leading to severe disruptions in the manufacturing process. The flaw was reported to CISA by Rockwell Automation, who recommended users update their systems to FactoryTalk Batch View version 3.00.00 or later to prevent exploitation. This updated version addresses the authentication bypass vulnerability by improving the security around user account management and authentication processes.
To mitigate the risk, CISA has outlined a series of defensive measures. These include minimizing network exposure for control system devices, ensuring they are not accessible from the internet, and using firewalls to isolate control systems from business networks. CISA also recommends employing secure remote access methods, such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), and ensuring all remote access devices and software are up to date. These measures are essential for protecting critical infrastructure and preventing attackers from exploiting vulnerabilities in industrial control systems.
While no public instances of exploitation have been reported as of the latest update, the severity and complexity of the attack indicate the need for organizations to take proactive security measures. CISA continues to emphasize the importance of conducting impact assessments and applying security best practices to defend against potential threats. As part of its ongoing efforts, CISA has published additional resources on industrial control systems cybersecurity, providing guidance on how to implement defense-in-depth strategies and improve overall system security.
