The European Commission has announced a €1.3 billion investment in cybersecurity, AI, and digital skills for 2025-2027. This funding, part of the Digital Europe Programme, aims to advance digital technologies across the European Union. The allocation will specifically enhance cybersecurity measures, focusing on strengthening the EU’s critical infrastructures like hospitals and submarine cables. Cybersecurity solutions such as the EU Cybersecurity Reserve will boost resilience in these areas.
A portion of the funds will support the deployment of the EU’s Digital Identity Wallet, designed to protect personal data and prevent fraud.
Additionally, the funding will enhance the availability of generative AI applications, support digital innovation hubs, and improve digital skills education. These projects align with the EU’s broader goal of bolstering digital defenses and expanding its technological capabilities.
The funding also targets AI and tech development, including projects like AI Factories and the Destination Earth initiative. These efforts aim to improve healthcare through immersive virtual environments and create digital models to help with climate adaptation.
Other initiatives will strengthen European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs), providing training and resources for the adoption of new technologies across the public and private sectors.
The EU’s Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) will further support technological innovation by introducing the STEP Seal, a quality label for promising projects. The upcoming DIGITAL calls will offer funding opportunities to businesses and public administrations from EU Member States and associated countries. These initiatives reflect the EU’s ongoing commitment to advancing digital innovation, cybersecurity, and skills training.
