Erie Insurance and Erie Indemnity Company have disclosed that a weekend cyberattack is behind their recent business disruptions and platform outages. Erie Indemnity Company is the primary management company for the Erie Insurance Group, a major United States property and casualty insurer. The company provides auto, home, life, and business insurance policies and currently has over six million active policies in force. Since Saturday, June 7th, Erie Insurance has been suffering from widespread outages and also significant business disruptions for its customers. Customers are unable to log into the customer portal and are reporting difficulties making claims or receiving paperwork from the company.
Today, the Erie Indemnity Group officially filed a Form 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission about the incident. The company stated it first detected “unusual network activity” on its systems on Saturday, June 7, 2025, prompting immediate action. In a similar notice that was posted on the Erie Insurance website, the company says it activated its incident response protocol. It took immediate action to respond to the situation to safeguard its systems and has continued to take protective action. This included proactively taking certain systems offline, which has temporarily impacted the company’s ability to fulfill and distribute customer orders.
The company is now working with law enforcement and is conducting a comprehensive forensic analysis with the assistance of leading cybersecurity experts.
This is being done to gain a full understanding of this event and to determine the full scope of the security breach. When companies suffer a cyberattack, the usual response is to shut down systems to prevent the attack’s spread to other devices. Unfortunately, this necessary defensive response also disrupts applications and websites that are used by the company to conduct their business. Erie Insurance is also warning that they will not call or email any customers to request payments during this widespread service outage.
The company, Erie Insurance, says the incident’s full scope, nature, and ultimate impact are still being determined by their internal teams.
Insurers are a very popular target for cyber-attacks given the large volumes of sensitive customer data that they typically hold. This incident follows a recent string of attacks on other major companies in the food and retail industries across the world. The 2021 ransomware attack on food distributor JBS was one of the most high-profile incidents to impact the food industry. Dozens of other major companies have also been affected, including Dole, Sysco, Mondelez, and also the company known as Americold.
