Emergency Fix for Windows Server 2019 Bug

Emergency Fix for Windows Server 2019 Bug

Microsoft has released an emergency out-of-band (OOB) update for Windows Server 2019 to address a bug causing 0x800f0982 errors during the installation of the May 2024 Patch Tuesday security updates. This issue has been widely reported by system administrators, particularly affecting servers without the English (United States) language pack. However, some servers with the English language pack have also encountered the error.

The problem gained attention when multiple administrators shared their experiences online, confirming the bug’s prevalence across different regions, including German and Spanish servers. Microsoft acknowledged the issue and indicated that devices lacking the English (United States) language pack were more likely to be affected. Despite this, the bug also impacted some servers with the language pack installed, causing similar errors.

To resolve the issue, Microsoft released the KB5039705 OOB update, which addresses the known bug related to the language pack. The update’s support bulletin notes that installing the regular May updates might fail if the English (United States) language pack is not present. Even for devices with the language pack, the error could occur, but the OOB update aims to fix both scenarios.

Administrators are advised to download and install the OOB update using Windows Update, WSUS, or the Microsoft Update Catalog. After applying the KB5039705 update and rebooting the server, the May 2024 Patch Tuesday security updates should install without errors. This emergency update ensures that the critical security patches can be successfully applied, maintaining the security and stability of affected Windows Server 2019 systems.
