Electrica Group Tackles Ongoing Cyberattack

Electrica Group, one of Romania’s most significant electricity distributors, has confirmed it is currently addressing an ongoing cyberattack. The company, which serves over 3.8 million customers across Romania and is listed on the Bucharest and London stock exchanges, issued a warning to investors regarding the situation. CEO Alexandru Chirita stated that specialized teams are actively working alongside national cybersecurity authorities to manage the incident and mitigate its impact. While the nature of the cyberattack has not been disclosed, Electrica Group assured that its critical systems remain unaffected.

In an effort to secure its infrastructure, Electrica Group has implemented temporary protective measures, which have led to some disruptions in customer interactions. However, the company emphasized that these measures are precautionary and designed to ensure the overall security of its operations. Electrica’s primary concern is maintaining the continuity of electricity supply while also safeguarding the personal and operational data of its customers.

The company’s response underscores the importance of cybersecurity in critical sectors like energy, where any disruption could have far-reaching consequences. Despite the ongoing attack, Electrica’s leadership is focused on quickly resolving the incident while keeping the public informed about its progress. The company’s commitment to protecting both its infrastructure and customer data is central to its ongoing efforts to mitigate the effects of the attack.

The timing of this cyberattack is noteworthy, as it follows Romania’s recent political turmoil, with suspicions of foreign interference in the country’s presidential election. While the company has not publicly attributed the attack to any specific group, there is speculation about possible involvement from pro-Russian hackers. Regardless of the attack’s origin, Electrica has urged its consumers to remain cautious and report any suspicious communications to prevent further security breaches.
