Eisai, a major Japanese pharmaceutical company, is grappling with a ransomware attack and collaborating with law enforcement. The company stated that some of its servers were encrypted on June 3, prompting the creation of a task force and the involvement of external experts and authorities.
As a result of the incident, certain systems, including logistics systems, have been taken offline, while the investigation into potential data leakage is ongoing.
Eisai Group is actively working with external experts and law enforcement to safeguard its systems and achieve a successful recovery, aiming to minimize disruptions for partners and stakeholders.
The attack’s impact on the company’s earnings forecast for the fiscal year is also being assessed. In 2022, Eisai reported revenues exceeding $5.3 billion.
Although no ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, Eisai joins a growing list of pharmaceutical giants that have fallen victim to cyberattacks. Enzo Biochem, a New York-based biosciences and diagnostics company, recently disclosed the theft of test information and personal data from nearly 2.5 million individuals during an April ransomware attack.
Similarly, Sun Pharmaceuticals, India’s largest pharmaceutical company, acknowledged a ransomware attack involving the theft of company data and personal information in March. Earlier this year, another major pharmacy company reported a data breach compromising the sensitive personal data of almost six million people after a ransomware group’s claim.
