Duolingo Cuts Contractors in AI Transition

Duolingo, the popular language-learning platform, is reducing its reliance on human contractors by incorporating generative artificial intelligence (genAI) for content creation. The company has reportedly “offboarded” 10% of its contractors, emphasizing that it no longer requires additional personnel for certain tasks handled by these individuals. Duolingo’s CEO, Luis Von Ahn, revealed the integration of genAI in November, highlighting its ability to rapidly generate various content forms, including text and images. The move is part of Duolingo’s effort to streamline operations and enhance efficiency, leveraging AI to create text for language learning and supplementary materials.

While the language-learning giant has eliminated some contractors, it clarified that full-time workers and other contractors at Duolingo continue to utilize the technology in their roles. The company has retained 600 full-time employees by the end of 2022, with no reported impact on their positions due to the recent cutback of contractors. Duolingo’s use of AI extends beyond content creation, incorporating it into features like generating voices within the app and providing AI-generated feedback and conversations through the Duolingo Max subscription. The move exemplifies the ongoing trend of businesses integrating automation and AI technologies, prompting concerns about the potential impact on employment.

As Duolingo embraces AI-driven processes, including genAI for content creation, it reflects a broader industry shift toward automation. The adoption of AI technologies raises questions about the future of employment, with reports suggesting a net reduction of jobs globally due to automation. According to the World Economic Forum, over 80 million jobs are expected to be lost to automation, surpassing the 69 million jobs projected to be generated, resulting in a net reduction of 14 million jobs. Duolingo’s strategic move aligns with the broader trend of leveraging AI for operational efficiency while acknowledging the ongoing debate surrounding the societal impact of AI on employment.
