Duke Energy Suffers Customer Data Breach

Duke Energy has revealed that a potential data breach may have impacted customer personal information in May 2024. According to the company, a third party was able to access certain customer data from the company’s public website. While the breach did not expose passwords, financial information, or access to online accounts through the company’s My Account or Business Experience portals, it has raised concerns about the security of personal data. Duke Energy assured customers that it took immediate steps to protect accounts and prevent further exposure.

In response to the breach, Duke Energy’s cybersecurity team conducted a thorough analysis to understand how the incident occurred. The company emphasized that no sensitive information, such as passwords or financial data, was compromised during the breach. Furthermore, the company has reinforced the security of its systems by implementing several advanced modifications to its public website to prevent future attacks. These actions are part of Duke Energy’s ongoing efforts to enhance its cybersecurity measures and protect its customers’ personal information.

Duke Energy also highlighted its proactive approach to security, noting that its cybersecurity team continuously analyzes millions of data points daily to identify potential threats. Alerts generated from this data help inform timely actions to strengthen the company’s defenses. By continually monitoring and improving its systems, Duke Energy is striving to ensure the ongoing security of its customers’ information and prevent any future breaches.

As a precautionary measure, Duke Energy is offering eligible customers 12 months of free credit monitoring services through Experian. This service is being provided to help customers monitor their credit activity and detect any potential signs of identity theft. The company’s quick response to the incident and commitment to improving security reflects its dedication to protecting customer data in an increasingly complex cybersecurity landscape.
