Discord Adds End-to-End Encryption for Calls

Discord Adds End-to-End Encryption for Calls

Discord has unveiled a major update to its platform by rolling out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for voice and video communications. This upgrade, which began on September 17, 2024, ensures that conversations within direct messages, group DMs, voice channels, and Go Live streams are fully encrypted. By adopting this technology, Discord joins a growing list of leading communication apps that prioritize user privacy and data security. The company, which serves over 200 million monthly users, aims to bolster user trust by making it impossible for even Discord itself to access the content of these encrypted communications.

The implementation of E2EE means that any audio or video calls made through Discord will be shielded from unauthorized access, effectively safeguarding users’ conversations from potential eavesdropping. This move is particularly notable for Discord, which originally gained popularity as a group chat platform for gamers but has since expanded its user base to include a wide range of communities and individuals. Stephen Birarda, Discord’s staff software engineer, detailed that users will be able to confirm the encryption status of their calls and verify other participants’ security.

However, it’s important to note that Discord’s end-to-end encryption does not extend to all aspects of the platform. Private messages and group chats will continue to operate under Discord’s existing content moderation policies, which means they are not covered by the new encryption standards. This decision reflects Discord’s balance between ensuring privacy and maintaining the ability to moderate content to prevent abuse and enforce community guidelines.

The rollout of E2EE marks a significant step in Discord’s ongoing efforts to enhance user security and privacy. While the company has not announced plans to expand encryption to other areas of the platform, such as direct messages or group chats, the introduction of E2EE for voice and video calls is a crucial development in response to increasing demands for secure communication solutions. As digital privacy concerns continue to grow, Discord’s move underscores a broader trend towards more robust encryption practices across various communication platforms.
