DHS Forms AI Safety Board with Top Execs

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recently announced the formation of a new Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board. This initiative is a response to the growing importance and integration of AI technologies across various sectors of critical infrastructure in the United States. The board is tasked with guiding the deployment of AI technologies in a way that maximizes their benefits while mitigating potential risks. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas emphasized that the board will play a crucial role in overseeing AI applications in areas ranging from defense and energy to transportation and information technology.

The AI Safety and Security Board boasts a diverse membership, including prominent figures such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and CEOs from major corporations like IBM, Microsoft, and AMD. Additionally, it includes civic leaders and academics like Maya Wiley, president of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and Rumman Chowdhury, CEO of Humane Intelligence. This wide array of members reflects the board’s commitment to a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to AI governance, taking into account technical, social, and ethical dimensions.

Secretary Mayorkas outlined that the board’s mission will extend beyond merely advising on AI deployment; it will also formulate practical recommendations, guidelines, and best practices for the responsible use of AI. This includes defending against the misuse of AI technologies that could potentially threaten critical infrastructure. However, details on specific defensive measures or strategies the DHS plans to employ were not disclosed, with Mayorkas stating that more comprehensive information would be announced in the future.

President Joe Biden directed the creation of the 22-person board, which is set to convene for the first time in May and will meet quarterly thereafter. The board is expected to foster dialogue and collaboration between leaders in the AI field and stakeholders in critical infrastructure, allowing for an exchange of information on security risks and mitigation strategies related to AI. This proactive approach aims to harness AI’s potential for innovation while safeguarding against its potential threats, ensuring that critical infrastructure remains resilient and secure in the face of technological advancements.
