in Incidents

Coffee Meets Bagel, a popular dating app with a significant user base, recently experienced a severe hack that led to a week-long outage, leaving user data and security in question. The app, which boasts “over 150 million matches and counting,” was targeted by an external actor who maliciously deleted company data and files, rendering the service inaccessible starting on August 27, 2023.

Furthermore, after diligent efforts, the company managed to restore its services on September 3, 2023, and promptly notified law enforcement about the incident. Throughout the outage, users received daily updates from Coffee Meets Bagel, although the cause of the downtime was only revealed upon the app’s return. Some users had noticed decreased app responsiveness in the weeks leading up to the outage, but a direct link to the hack remains unconfirmed.

Founded by the Kang sisters, the app aims to facilitate meaningful connections among singles seeking serious relationships. Despite the hacking incident, the Coffee Meets Bagel app is now operational and functioning as usual.

Additionally, the company has initiated a thorough investigation into the breach, with ongoing efforts to enhance its cybersecurity measures. Experts emphasize the importance of proactive communication with users in such situations, ensuring transparency and compliance with data security regulations.

Users have a right to be informed about potential data compromises, and Coffee Meets Bagel is committed to maintaining user trust and security moving forward.
