Risas Dental & Braces, based in Phoenix, AZ, recently informed patients about a cyberattack detected in July 2023, during which their protected health information was compromised. Upon identifying unusual activity in their computer systems on July 10, 2023, the clinic promptly took measures to secure its network and engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident.
Following a thorough examination by digital forensics specialists, it was determined that unauthorized individuals had gained access to the network and potentially downloaded files containing patient data. The review of these files was completed on January 26, 2024, confirming that they contained sensitive health information, including names, contact details, treatment information, dates of service, and insurance details.
Affected individuals were officially notified of the breach via mail on March 22, 2024, to ensure they were aware of the incident and could take appropriate measures to safeguard their personal information. However, as the breach has not yet appeared on the HHS’ Office for Civil Rights breach portal, the exact number of individuals impacted remains unclear.
