Cybercrime Coalition Strikes Worldwide

A cybercrime collaboration between GhostSec and Stormous ransomware groups has emerged, marked by a surge in double extortion ransomware attacks worldwide. Led by Cisco Talos researcher Chetan Raghuprasad, reports highlight their joint efforts in deploying GhostLocker, now in a Golang variant, alongside the initiation of a new Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) program named STMX_GhostLocker. These attacks have targeted a diverse range of industries across numerous countries, including Cuba, Argentina, Poland, and China, among others.

The coalition, part of The Five Families, aims to fortify unity within the cybercriminal underworld, strategically expanding operations and collaborations. Operating since August 2023, GhostSec and its counterparts have recently ventured into RaaS, offering GhostLocker for $269.99 per month, subsequently followed by the integration of Python-based ransomware by Stormous. The latest findings from Talos underscore a symbiotic relationship between the two groups, unveiling an updated GhostLocker version in November 2023 and the inception of STMX_GhostLocker in 2024.

STMX_GhostLocker presents a comprehensive array of services catering to affiliates, ranging from paid to free options, emphasizing versatility in its approach. Notably, a leak site on the dark web associated with STMX_GhostLocker reveals a roster of victims hailing from India, Uzbekistan, and Indonesia, among others. The ransomware, equipped with enhanced encryption capabilities and a redesigned ransom note, underscores the groups’ sophistication in coercing victims to comply with their demands or risk data exposure.

In addition to deploying ransomware, GhostSec leverages advanced tools like GhostPresser to compromise WordPress sites, further amplifying their impact and demonstrating a commitment to evolving tactics. Talos’ discovery of new tools like the GhostSec Deep Scan toolset and GhostPresser underscores the group’s adaptability and strategic prowess. As these cybercriminal entities continue to refine their techniques and expand their reach, proactive measures are imperative to thwart their malicious activities and safeguard against future attacks.
