Cyberattack Hits French Telephone Operator

Free, France’s second-largest telecommunications operator, has confirmed that it recently experienced a cyberattack targeting a management tool that resulted in unauthorized access to the personal data of certain subscribers. In an official statement, the company emphasized that critical information, including passwords, bank card details, and content of communications—such as emails, SMS, and voice messages—remains secure and unaffected by the breach. Despite the attack, Free reported no operational impact on its services, assuring customers that its activities continued without disruption.

While the specific date and extent of the cyberattack have not been disclosed, Free has taken immediate action by filing a criminal complaint with the public prosecutor. This move aims to initiate an investigation into the breach and its implications. In compliance with legal requirements, the company has also informed the National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties (CNIL) and the National Agency for the Security of Information Systems (ANSSI) about the incident.

As part of its response to the attack, Free has committed to strengthening the protection of its information systems. The operator has assured affected subscribers that they will be notified promptly via email regarding the breach and any necessary actions they may need to take. This proactive approach reflects Free’s dedication to maintaining customer trust and transparency during such incidents.

Cybersecurity remains a critical concern for telecommunications companies, especially as the frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks continue to rise. In light of this incident, Free has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding customer data and has implemented measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. As the investigation unfolds, the company aims to provide updates and further assurance to its subscribers about their data’s security.
